This was for a mock interview I had. I sat down and the person very casually asked me why I wanted to do medicine. It's hard to describe why exactly but it felt like she was just asking it out of personal interest rather than for the mock interview, so my reply was:
"Oh you know, the standard interest in science, helping oth...wait a minute. Have we started?"

Well a lot of people, while they admire humility in a physician, do look for confidence in a surgeon.

interviewer: so in your previous interview what were you talking about?

me: cancer, and how it can be treated

    interviewer: so what is cancer?

me: when the cells are multiplying out of control and form tumours.

interviewer: and what do you think might cause that to happen?

me: uh, well the cells start to work incorrectly, maybe the nerves...um, things make things go too fast

interviewer: *raises eyebrows* nerves? Nerves cause cancer?

me: no, not nerves, um. Maybe chemicals in the cell are unbalanced and um there is too much and mechanisms go wrong

interviewer: what are you learning about in biology at the moment?

me: oh, the cell cycle, so maybe when the cells are multiplying the multiplication bit it doesn't switch off?

interviewer: (interviewer is explaining something about cell cycle and i'm totally freaking out like a rabbit in oncoming traffic, staring out the window, thinking how nice it would be to be outside running away right now, down the horrible cobblestone path, in the rain) "so during this phase the cells would multiply?"

    me: uh, yes

    interviewer: no.

So...yes, that went well. Failed the trick question. I was pooled, then rejected.

    Good luck everyone who has interviews this week! Try not to stare out of windows and stop listening ^^;

    During my barts interview,

Dr: what do you learn most from your shadowing?

ME: said some things about the reasons behind the steep fall in incidence of rheumatic fever and TB in early 1900s and then concluded "if you wanna save lifes, maybe medicine is not a good choice"...

Then, I stopped; knowing that I have shot myself in the foot.
Then, I said something else to justify me wishing to get in medicine.
